Essential oils are a natural, safe and simple tool to help support your child’s health. In the first post of my four-part series on the top four essential oils for kids, I shared one of my favourite blends to help keep your kids healthy throughout the school year, dōTERRA On Guard. On Guard is dōTERRA’s proprietary blend for immune support and quite simply, it rocks! Today, it is all about Lavender essential oil. Lavender is often one of the first essential oils that people try, and for good reason, it smells beautiful and has so many uses! Lavender essential oil will always be a top pick for kids because of it’s soothing and calming properties.
Having trouble getting your kids to sleep? Try diffusing a few drops of lavender essential oil in their bedroom. I also like to put a drop of lavender mixed with fractionated coconut oil on the bottom of my daughter’s feet before bedtime giving her a gentle foot massage. You could even mix up a 10 ml roller bottle blend with 10-15 drops of lavender and fill with fractionated coconut oil and you can roll this right on their feet before bedtime. Super simple! Of course, you always want to follow safety guidelines and proper dilution ratios for babies and kids and exercise common sense. Better yet, dōTERRA also makes 10 ml Touch roller blends that are already properly diluted in the safe amount to use topically with kids.
Add a couple drops of Lavender essential oil to your child’s nightly bath. This is a great way to start the bedtime routine and help them start to wind down. Lavender essential oil is also great for soothing irritated skin and it smells beautiful at bath time. If you love DIY, you can make your own DIY Lavender Bath Salts using Epsom Salt and Lavender essential oil. Find the recipe at the bottom of this post.
This summer with the crazy amounts of rain we have been experiencing the bugs and mosquitos have been insane! Lavender is an amazing oil to soothe bug and mosquito bites. Simply put a couple drops of Lavender essential oil in the palm of your hand, mix with fractionated coconut oil and rub on your kid’s bug bites. You’ll be amazed at how quickly and well this works to stop the itch from bug bites. You can also use it topically before you go outside to repel bugs.
Spent too much time in the sun? Mix 10 drops of Lavender oil in an ounce of aloe vera to sooth a sunburn. Or make a DIY After Sun Spray. Find the recipe for the DIY After Sun Spray at the bottom of the post.
Soothe various types of pain like sore muscles and aches with Lavender essential oil mixed with fractionated coconut oil. Lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce pain due to inflammation.
Lavender is also a wonderful oil to help soothe scratches, bumps and booboos because of it’s antimicrobial and antioxidant characteristics. Lavender oil can help speed up the healing process of cuts and scrapes.
DIY Lavender Bath Salts
Mix two cups of Epsom Salts with 2 tbsp of your favourite carrier oil (I love fractionated coconut oil!) and 10-15 drops of Lavender Essential Oil. Mix this up in a glass mixing bowl and then store in an airtight glass container like a mason jar. Add a few scoops to your child’s bath and voilà…you will have a relaxing spa like bath to help your child wind down for the night.
